Inside the World of Penitent
Penitent is a solitaire game where players take the role of 19th century architects, creating a vision of the American penitentiary and penal reform.
Modernized prisons of the early nineteenth century ushered in radical changes to how individuals were incarcerated, providing work for inmates, segregating prisoners by sex, separating and classifying prisoners by severity and character of offense.
During this era, two competing models of reform emerged. The separate system, confined prisoners in solitary cells 23 hours each day, and the silent system, wherein prisoners worked in workhouses and ate meals together in a rigidly enforced silence before retiring to their own cell to sleep.
